Scope
This standard applies to IE3 (premium-efficiency) totally enclosed fan-cooled (TEFC) International Cooling (IC)411, totally enclosed air over (TEAO) IC418 and totally enclosed non-ventilated (TENV) IC410, horizontal and vertical, single-speed, squirrel cage polyphase induction motors, 0.75 kW to 370 kW (1 hp to 500 hp), and up to 4000 V, in International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) frame sizes (80) and larger, for severe-duty applications seen in the Process Industry (commonly referred to as IE3 (premium-efficiency severe-duty motors). Excluded from the scope of this standard are motors with sleeve bearings, totally enclosed blower cooled (TEBC) IC416, and additional specific features required for flame proof motors.
Purpose
This standard defines a specification that deals with mechanical and electrical performance, electrical insulation systems, corrosion protection, and electrical and mechanical testing for severe-duty totally enclosed squirrel cage poly-phase induction motors, 0.75 kW to 370 kW (1 hp to 500 hp), for petroleum, chemical, and other process industry severe-duty applications. The motor is commonly referred to as an IE3 (premium-efficiency) severe-duty motor. Many of the specified materials and components in this standard stem from experience with severely corrosive atmospheres and the necessity for safe, quiet, reliable, IE3 (premium-efficiency) severe-duty motors. The standard defines the core features required to label the motor as a "IEEE Std 841.1" motor or as an alternate it identifies allowable options to label it as a "IEEE Std 841.1 Features" motor where not all the core requirements must be met.
