The City of Los Angeles has long recognized the issues inherent to the productiveutilization of its information systems and in response, has taken a novel approach to theimplementation of its industrial pretreatment and stormwater enforcement systems for itsIndustrial Waste Management and Watershed Protections Divisions, which is to use the samesystem. Following thorough individual needs assessments, the City recognized theoverall benefits that could be derived from the shared use of these otherwise, and usuallydifferent, technology applications and business processes. Through data sharing, improved and cross-functional training, the sharing of inspectionactivities and the use of a single system, the City of Los Angeles has recognized manyefficiencies and has reduced the capital cost of their information systems delivery andmaintenance. These activities were not without some give-and-take; however, the overallbenefit to the City and its citizens demanded the Divisions to work cooperatively to align theiroverall processes.
