Description / Abstract: Load factor design is a method for design of simple and continuous beam and girder structures of moderate length. It is a method of proportioning structural members for multiples of the design loads. In the alternate load factor design method, the strength of continuous members is determined from a plastic analysis as described in Articles 10.44 and 10.48.1.3. To ensure serviceability and durability in the alternate load factor method, consideration is given to the control of permanent deformations under overloads, to the fatigue characteristics under service loadings, and to the control of live load deflections under service loadings.
