Description / Abstract:
This standard applies to those radioactive liquid wastes in
aqueous form (hereinafter referred to as liquid wastes) that are
capable of being immobilized upon placement in a receptacle for
transportation. The principles and procedures described in this
standard apply specifically to those liquid wastes produced in
light-water nuclear power plants and shipped to commercial burial
grounds. Most liquid radioactive wastes generated as a result of
the operation of light-water reactors fall into the classification
of low specific activity (LSA); therefore this classification is
noted in a number of sections. It is not the intention of this
standard to limit its applicability to LSA wastes. This standard
may also be useful and applicable to other liquid wastes from other
sources and, where appropriate, is recommended for guidance in
preparing those wastes for shipment. Typical types of liquid waste
envisioned as being covered by this standard include, but are not
limited to, sodium sulfate regenerative solutions, evaporator
concentrates, aqueous chemical wastes, aqueous decontamination
solutions, reverse osmosis concentrates, and filter backwash
liquids. This standard does not apply to wastes such as resins,
organic solvents, lubricating oils, and crystalized regenerative
solutions.
